I’ve been thinking a lot about Xmas and New year and the resolutions that would follow. I want to push the boat out and pick something I know would be difficult to achieve, and make a solid change in my life. One of those ideas included ditching Facebook. It’s a fantastic invention but the only thing it really assists me with is procrastination.
I’ve an addictive personality and I always struggle to keep things in moderation – social media is no exception to this. I probably check Facebook in excess of 50 times each day, a tab is always open on my browser and the app is constantly pushing notifications to my phone.
I just quickly reviewed my feed and it’s full of of ridiculous comments, silly statuses and general crap. Thinking about it now I’m not even sure why I – or anyone else – posts these things?
So a month early I’ve deactivated my Facebook and decided to remove social media from being an integral part of my life. I’m planning to focus my attention on more important things such as learning, family and health. I’m not sure how long I plan to do this, or how it will turn out. I think that’s the appealing thing about it all.
This deactivation is a little bit problematic especially with my online following on the attached Webknit FB account. I had over 1k followers on that account and I’m gutted to let those go after so much hard work, but it’s something I want to do. I can reactivate the account at any time so I’ve not lost Facebook, it’s just lost me.
My following on Twitter is almost twice as large as Facebook and I’m planning to keep that. I don’t actually follow anyone on twitter outside of work related circles and it’s probably my best learning source, so that’s staying. Instagram is also staying as I’m interested in photography and it’s a different medium to Facebook, I rarely check my feed or comment on other photos.
